At St Andrew’s Infant school, we follow the Development Matters EYFS
Curriculum in the Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum for Art and
Design in Key Stage 1.
The National Curriculum for Art and Design (2014) aims to ensure that all pupils:
1. Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
2. Become confident in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and
design techniques.
3. Evaluate and analyse their work using the language of art, craft and design
4. Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the
historical and cultural development of their art forms.
We use a detailed skills progression document to plan and deliver art lessons.
This ensures that children’s art and design skills are developed systematically
from their time in Foundation Stage to the end of Year 2. We provide
opportunities for the children to transfer their art skills into other areas of the
curriculum.
As a school, alongside the Development Matters and National Curriculum we
follow the Cornerstones curriculum to ensure a well-structured approach to this
creative subject. The children are taught art as part of their termly work in
exciting topics such as ‘The Enchanted Woodland’, ‘Bright Lights, Big City, ‘Land
Ahoy’ and ‘Wriggle and Crawl’. Where the children will be asked to draw maps,
design posters and produce some analytical drawings in Science.
In order to promote creative teaching and the children’s enjoyment and
curiosity for learning, children will be introduced to a broad range of work by a
variety of artists and designers who use different media; through the skills lessons,
the creative curriculum and visits to local art galleries and where possible, from
practicing artists.
