At St Andrew’s Infant School the children develop a love of learning and curiosity to learn new things through a topic led approach. This gives the children exciting subjects and topics to explore and write about. It is our aim that children learn to write clearly and coherently, with confidence and purpose, have fluent and legible handwriting and are able to speak and communicate with confidence.
In Reception, the children are taught Read, Write, Inc. phonics, letter formation and correct formation of their name. The children write in small groups, guided by the teacher, until they become more skilled and confident. The children design their own curriculum, so always have something interesting and relevant to them to write about.
In Key Stage 1, the children have a Read, Write, Inc. phonics lessons for 25 minutes a day, in small groups.
We follow the Penpals handwriting scheme, which is taught as a discreet lesson. Children have weekly spellings, which they are taught in school, sent home to learn and tested on each week. In Year 2 comprehension lessons take place once a week.
The children write in many different forms, including letter writing, lists, captions, instructions, recounts (of an event), report writing , and story writing.
